How to Flip an Image in Word (Windows & Mac)

To flip an image in Word, select the picture, open Picture Format > Rotate, and choose Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical. The commands sit in the Arrange group on the desktop ribbon. A horizontal flip reverses left and right; a vertical flip reverses top and bottom.

How to flip an image in Word on Windows

Use this workflow for an ordinary picture inserted in a desktop Word document:

  1. Open your document and select the picture you want to flip.
  2. Go to Picture Format and open Rotate in the Arrange group.
  3. Choose Flip Horizontal to mirror left to right, or Flip Vertical to mirror top to bottom.
  4. Click outside the picture to check the result, then save your document.

These commands are shown in Microsoft’s guide to rotating pictures in Word. Older editions may label the contextual ribbon Picture Tools > Format, depending on your version.

If you have not inserted the photo yet, start with Insert > Pictures and select your file. Click the picture itself before looking for formatting controls. A cursor blinking beside the image means you are editing the paragraph, rather than selecting the picture.

Check a recognizable detail after the flip: a person’s raised hand, a door handle, or a word on a sign. Symmetrical graphics can look unchanged even when the command worked. A useful test is to compare an off-center detail with the original photo.

How to flip a picture in Word on Mac

On desktop Word for Mac, select the photo and look under Picture Format > Rotate. Choose the direction you need. If the ribbon is compact, expand Arrange to reveal Rotate. Microsoft documents this layout in its Office object-flipping guide.

The small handle above a selected picture is for rotation. Dragging it tilts the photo; it does not create a reflection. Use the menu command when you want someone’s face pointing the other way without turning the whole photograph sideways.

Afterward, inspect the page at its normal reading size. A composition that looks balanced while zoomed in may crowd a caption when viewed as a complete page. Keep any caption outside the photo so it can remain readable when the picture is mirrored.

Word in a browser or on a phone

The instructions above describe the Windows and Mac desktop applications. Browser and mobile ribbons can differ, so do not assume every desktop formatting command has the same location there.

Select the picture and check the available picture controls. If your version exposes Rotate with a flip command, use it. If those options are missing, open the document in desktop Word or flip the source picture first and insert the new file. That second route is practical when you are finishing a document on a phone.

For photos already on an Apple phone, our guide to flipping a picture on iPhone covers the Photos workflow. When replacing an image, keep a copy of the document and note the displayed size so the new file fits the same space.

Choose the direction that matches your document

Goal Best choice
Make a person face the opposite side of the page Flip Horizontal
Make a top-to-bottom reflection Flip Vertical
Turn an upside-down photograph upright without reversing letters Rotate 180 degrees
Keep a caption readable while reversing the photograph Flip only the picture

Think of a photograph of a book cover. A horizontal flip makes the title read backward. A 180-degree rotation leaves the letters in their original order but turns the book upside down. These are different results, even though both can make a picture seem to face another direction.

Before mirroring a product image, inspect labels and asymmetric details. A reversed control panel, shoe, or logo can give readers the wrong impression of the actual object. Use the original orientation when accuracy matters more than the page composition.

Why can’t I flip the picture in Word?

Picture Format is missing

Click the picture once and look for selection handles. If a text box or another object is covering it, move that object temporarily in a copy of the document. Widen the window if the formatting ribbon has collapsed into smaller menus.

I need several objects to stay together

For a grouped illustration, Microsoft’s Word grouping instructions require at least two selected objects and a wrapping option other than In Line with Text. Select the objects, then use Picture Format or Shape Format > Group > Group.

Grouping can help preserve relative positions, but check lettering separately. Mirroring a picture is different from mirroring editable text. Avoid grouping a normal caption with a photo unless the caption also needs to move as part of the illustration.

The picture looks softer after saving

A flip does not require adding pixels or changing dimensions. Compression and enlargement are separate causes of softness. On Windows, Microsoft’s compression settings are under File > Options > Advanced > Image Size and Quality. Select Do not compress images in file for the relevant document when preserving detail matters.

Save the result outside the document

Saving the Word file keeps the layout for that document. To reuse a picture elsewhere, desktop Office provides Save as Picture from the picture’s context menu; on Mac, Control-click to open it. Choose a format, file name, and destination, as described in Microsoft’s image-saving guide.

Open that exported file before using it elsewhere and confirm it has the intended direction. For a predictable standalone result, you can also mirror the original photo before inserting it into Word.

A faster way to prepare a picture for Word

Our free image flipper works in your browser without uploading the photo. Add the original image, choose horizontal or vertical, check the preview, and download a PNG, JPG, or WebP. Insert that finished file into Word as a normal picture.

This is useful when the document moves between desktop and mobile, or when the same mirrored photo needs to appear in several files. PNG is a good choice for screenshots and graphics with small lettering. Keep the original beside the mirrored copy so future edits start from the right version.

Frequently asked questions

Does flipping a picture in Word change the original file on my computer?

Flipping an inserted picture changes its appearance in the document. It does not overwrite the source photo you inserted. Save a separate mirrored image if you need the result in another app.

How do I restore the original direction later?

Select the picture and apply the same flip again. Two horizontal flips or two vertical flips cancel each other. Immediately after an edit, Undo also restores the previous state.

Will a flipped photo keep its direction in a PDF?

The PDF should show the picture as it appears on the Word page. Open the exported PDF to check the orientation and layout before sharing or printing it.

Can I mirror the picture but keep a sign inside it readable?

A flip reverses every part of a flat picture, including signs and logos. Keep the photo unflipped, or edit the lettering separately in an image editor before inserting the result.
